Welcome

Hi everyone. Well here we go. As you all know - this has been my dream holiday for a long time now. I hope you enjoy this trip as well. I hope to see the "real" Portugal and share this with you all.

I will try to update you regularly on where I am and what I have seen. I will also give you a brief history of places I see. I am also going to try to speak Portuguese as much as possible. Mas só falo um pouco de português.

I am on a mission to discover the essence of Portugal. Portugal's history - both glorious and sometimes not so glorious - has fascinated me for years. I hope you find this trip informative and fun.

Just a short note to acknowledge that this trip is a result of the passing of my mother, and she will be remembered throughout this adventure.

My first stop is Lisbon (Lisboa).

Viseu

Welcome to Viseu. This is me just hours ago spending up. I have bought a few things here as all is Portuguese.

It is very rainy here and thanks to Sharen for the umbrella - it is my best friend today.

There is so much shopping available here, I am even tempted to go into the Hugo Boss store just to see how much things are. I also bought today a nice genuine Portuguese table cloth and intend to get some local pottery as well.

I will do another post to tell you all about Viseu. Had another great dinner out last night. My next stop is couchsurfing with the matador. He will be in Vila Real. Then Braga and then Porto where I will be couchsurfing for nearly two weeks. I am trying to extend my time up North so I will only have one week to be in Lisbon.

I am also over the YHA thing. I arrived here yesterday to find again that I had to leave the premises at 12 noon and not come back til 6pm. I told them that they should contact the Lonely Planet guide to inform them of this. So I booked myself into a nice place right in the centre of town. It is called Hotel Avenida. I am allowed to use the internet as long as I like. Nice.

The lady on reception was so nice to me I gave here a miniature boomerang. She grabbed me and kissed the living daylights out of me. Then she asked if I would have dinner with her and her husband on Friday night. I think I might just do that. This is how it works here for me. I dont have to do much but the most important thing here is to tell the Portuguese people that you are Australian. Dont even bother with saying English - always Australian (they are sick of the English I think), and that will make all this happen for anyone thinking of coming here.

A few people have mentioned that it might be good to record everything and maybe get a little tour thing published. I have also been told that here as well, mainly because of not many Australians coming here. There is another Irish pub here and have been for two beers already. This is Portugal, and you can sit anywhere all day if you like. Might take pen and paper there this arvo and start writing down some things. Rainy days are great for this. Hope everyone is well. Love the travelling Aussie

Hi Tony,

Sounds like you're getting kick-backs from Tourism Portugal! What's the night-life like over there (or have you been to exhausted to try and find it)?

Regards,
Enzo

I love the jacket, 27Euros is pretty cheap. I think people being so friendly also has to do with you making the effort with the language. I hope you see the sun soon, mind you it's been pissing down here.
