Hi again.
This is the oldest part of Guarda and was, and still is inhabited by the Jewish community. Before in secret, now free. There are markings on some doors to tell others that they were Christians.
I have the strangest hostel this time. Everyone has to leave the hostel at 12pm and can only return at 6pm. The room is air conditioned because of the cold here but I have found it quite pleasant. The woman on reception in the morning can only speak French, so I nod and pass on by.
Just wanted to write to you about the meals here. If you are in a restaurant and you order a main dish from the menu, you get more than you bargained for. Everytime I have done this (in any location), I also receive a platter before the meal arrives. Usually it includes a small range of cheeses, always olives, a variety of fish pastes (sardine, salmon etc) and about three kinds of breads that you rip apart. I went last night to a restaurant recommended by the Lonely Planet Guidebook. I ordered barbequed chicken this time (first chicken dish in Portugal). I also got the platter, but this time a glass of Muskatel. So nice. I think it is probably only here because of the cold. Then I had tirimasu for desert. Usually I have chocolate cake (so many different kinds here). Speaking of pudding face hehe.
So far, I have hardly touched any of the money saved and inherited. I am comfortably living off the weekly wage from the library. Portugal is a cheap place to visit and I knew that before I came, but I did not realise it would be this economical. The way the food "always" tastes, I feel very lucky. Last night for instance I had the barbequed chicken, tirimisu, a half bottle of white wine and a cafe. All this for around 13 euros. I am laughing.
Would love to hear from some family members. There is a link at the bottom of my posts that you can email with. Your letter goes to my email account and then I approve it to be put on the blog. If you don't want to do this my email is australeiro@y7mail.com
Well it's off to see the Cathedral and take some shots. The camera is working fine now - stupido australiano. I am on my fourth camcorder disc and had a look at some this morning. With a nice software system I will have some fun editing them all. They will make great DVDs for future memories.
My next stop is Viseu. See you there. Love Tony

Hey Tone
Love your posts, they are very imformative and teaching us as well. Oh, the food, loving it. Do you get any of the recipes from your CONTACTS??. Love your photo graphs, I was reading in Time mag that there are website that will produce a book of your photo's and comments from travels, I reckon that would be great for you!! YOU COULD BECOME PUBLISHED!! Take care Linda
Hi Tony,
the food sounds great, I get hungry just reading what you've eaten. I'm glad your camera is working, I wondered if it might have been a gremlin. I sent a comment to you last night but I don't think that I sent it properly.
I went to my last French class last week, but hopefully she'll run some more classes in August. I did go through the alphabet with her though and that was really helpful.
I hope you're taking lots of photos to bring back.
I was talking to Linda this morning about doing a "Portugal evening" when you get back. We could all make a Portugese dish and you could give a talk and show some photos. You don't have to, but I think it would be a really enjoyable evening. I know that Port Macquarie did something similar and as way of payment they covered half the cost of developing the photos, which was around $200. Anyway, think about it.
Hi Tony,
Is your Portuguese good enough? Are they friendly? Hope you are having a great time Evora looks amazing. We will check that out.
Danny
