Welcome

Hi everyone. Well here we go. As you all know - this has been my dream holiday for a long time now. I hope you enjoy this trip as well. I hope to see the "real" Portugal and share this with you all.

I will try to update you regularly on where I am and what I have seen. I will also give you a brief history of places I see. I am also going to try to speak Portuguese as much as possible. Mas só falo um pouco de português.

I am on a mission to discover the essence of Portugal. Portugal's history - both glorious and sometimes not so glorious - has fascinated me for years. I hope you find this trip informative and fun.

Just a short note to acknowledge that this trip is a result of the passing of my mother, and she will be remembered throughout this adventure.

My first stop is Lisbon (Lisboa).

Sintra

Hi again. Yesterday I went on a one-day tour of Sintra. Sintra is like a page torn from a fairytale. The portuguese Royalists summered here, as did the Moors before them, and it was one of the few places that Lord Byron liked, inspiring his travel epic "Childe Harolds Pilgrimage". Our tour took us to the Pena Palace. There had long been a convent here, reduced to 16th century ruins when Ferdinand bought it and restored it. The interior is very, very extravagant. Every room is crammed with fascinating treasures. In the ballroom there is a chandelier with 72 candles. There is the ballroom, the Arab room, Tearoom, Reading room, bedrooms and bathrooms. All the rooms have been left as they were in 1912. No pics (as usual) inside, but I took many outside.

There were many people on the bus and all had a nice time. They pick you up at your hotel and drop you off. A nice lunch was included as well.

I am going to do a tour soon of Lisbon and there is also a tour of Lisbon at night which I might do as well. My target is Mafra and there are no tours but I have all the transport details to get there. I much prefer to do the tours by myself.

Got sick of the tiny room and am now in a big room with a nice balcony etc. Thought I would live it up on my last nights here. It is a nice hotel. Last night I set out to have my first Morroccan dinner but both the restaurants were full so I thought I would step into the next one on the street and found myself eating Thai hehe. Always got room for a thai meal. I have been on some tram rides and really have only a Fado show to go. I am hoping to go with someone - who? Oh well. It is starting to rain here. My hair has started to go blond again here. The same thing happened in NZ when I lived there. The sunshine is so nice here. One day was like the height of summer in Coffs but so different. Anyway - I feel healthy and I am very glad that everything has gone so smoothly. I have been a fortunate traveller. See you. Tony
