Welcome

Hi everyone. Well here we go. As you all know - this has been my dream holiday for a long time now. I hope you enjoy this trip as well. I hope to see the "real" Portugal and share this with you all.

I will try to update you regularly on where I am and what I have seen. I will also give you a brief history of places I see. I am also going to try to speak Portuguese as much as possible. Mas só falo um pouco de português.

I am on a mission to discover the essence of Portugal. Portugal's history - both glorious and sometimes not so glorious - has fascinated me for years. I hope you find this trip informative and fun.

Just a short note to acknowledge that this trip is a result of the passing of my mother, and she will be remembered throughout this adventure.

My first stop is Lisbon (Lisboa).

Porto - last day

My last day in Porto. Took this pic just a little while ago. Gave him one euro for the nice little tune he played. Mind you , you really dont get a choice here - he came over to the table hehe.

Hopped on the bus this morning and ordered a coffee. Shared a laugh with the driver and walked quickly down the back. I am thinking seriously about buying an espresso machine when i get back. I have fallen in love with coffee on a new level. Wondering if someone would do me a favour there within the next 8 days. Would you check if we have the brand "Delta" coffee available, or any good African coffee. Thanks. I have learned that Portugal does not grow the coffee here - all African. Also - the bananas come from Africa or Brasil. Nice bananas. In fact all the fruit here is very nice. Portugal is famous for growing oranges and they are very nice.

Tomorrow I head for Lisbon for the last eight nights in Portugal. I am staying right in the heart of the night life and might just give it my best shot before I leave. There has always been rivalry between Porto and Lisbon (north v south). Even the futebol (soccer) teams. But the rivalry extend also to how "receiving" the people are in both places. I have always heard that the people in the north are the friendliest, and thought that to be true at first, but I must say I have changed my mind there. I am actually looking forward to Lisbon and all its loud noise. One thing I enjoyed about my first visit to Lisbon when I arrived was the Brazilians - they are a beautiful people and I find are the friendliest in all of Portugal (north or south).

Staying in Hostels has been an eye-opener and I have made a point of finding out all the nationalities of the people who have abused staff and made an ass of themselves. This has helped me make a list of all the places I never intend to visit. I don't care if they are just a little minority and dont reflect their countries - some have been the worst behaved people I have ever seen. I have used this to make me a better ambassador for Australia than ever. After a busload of teenage foreigners finished abusing the YHA receptionist, I went to the supermarket and bought us both a pastry. She loves me hehe. I had to go back to YHA because the couchsurfing host went to the Canary Island with parents for vacation.

Please give me some time to get settled again in Lisbon before I post. I am going to be away alot on tours etc so I will get back to you as quick as possible. Lisbon and surrounds hold the jewels in Portugals crown. So much to see there. Some good stories behind some of the stuff I am going to see. See you soon in Lisbon.
